Original Civil War photography is an area of specialty collecting unique unto itself. It offers a glimpse of the past as it actually was, not depicted from a painting or print that depicts the artists conception of the past, but rather the past as it actually looked! No matter how good the artist, the visions are still fantasy that never wasbut the photograph does not do anything other than reflect reality. This was an age of revolution in photography. The era saw the demise of the daguerrotype, which was a silvery image on a copper plate, and ushered in the golden age of the ambrotypean image either on red ("ruby") or clear glass and the ferrotype (tintype), which was an image on a tin plate. Carte-de-visites were popularized because of the low cost and high number of copies available ("calling cards")and were images placed on thin cardboard backs, often with the photographer imprint on the reverse as well as a revenue stamp. All of the images offered here are 100% authentic and original; not latter day re-creations. NOTE: There are reproductions on the market of images of all forms, and the investor should learn how to tell the difference, or purchase from a reputable source!
